Basseterre, St.Kitts

We arrived in beautiful St. Kitts early in the morning. The slopes above Basseterre still grow the rests of former flourishing sugar plantations. The last mill closed in 2005. The last plantation went bankrupt because production became too expensive. It had to import workers from Guyana because the islanders did not want to do the hard work in the sugar fields any more.
Rum production continues with imported molasses.

Ships arrive at a new pier and welcome gate.

Behind the gate, a brandnew shopping street opens. Some tourists never go beyond it and never see the cute town behind the old gate building which is now a museum.
Still in the new shoppping arcade.
