The New Religion
When the catholic priests in their robes arrived, they converted the people successfully. Now, almost all Marquesans are catholic. Bishop Hervé-Maria Le Cléac'h reconciled the old customs with the church by declaring their music and dance as compatible with church teachings and encouraged the Marquesans to preserve them. Their churches are filled with wonderful wood carvings and native singing.
