Tahuata

Tahuata was the first Marquesan Island reached by Europeans - not a positive experience for the islanders. Nevertheless, this is the place where the entire village of Hapatoni greeted us with a free lunch, very delicious local food. The band was very spirited and the dancers were full of enthusiasm.

Before we even entered the village, girls greeted us with leaf wreaths for everybody. Edwin Fii had set up his table in Vaiatahu on Tahuata. He is one of the foremost bone carvers of the islands.
